This is our highest grade of Japanese tea. Click on the picture for a closer look; it's as beautiful as it is delicious. This fine gyokuro brews a clear liquor with an exceptionally clean taste and a smooth mouthfeel. Look for notes of toasty seaweed with after notes of pale stonefruit. The Gyokuro Suimei is made from the youngest tea leaves, which are hand-picked and carefully processed into a fine needle shape.

Gyokuro means "jewel dew" and ours is produced in the Asahina area of the Shizuoka prefecture in Japan. The leaves are processed in the same manner as sencha, but the growing process for gyokuro is tweaked: the tea plants are shaded from direct sunlight for three weeks prior to harvesting. This means the leaves absorb more nutrients from the soil and gain a higher caffeine content, while reducing the bitterness, giving the tea a sweet, rich flavor.
